Ever Sip™ and Osprey®
Ever Sip™ vs Osprey®: What Actually Changes in Winter
Short answer: it is not either/or. Osprey® builds some of the best-carrying packs available and you should keep using yours. Ever Sip™ replaces the tube and bite valve, and the Osprey® version starts from Osprey's own parts, so the same reservoir and pack keep working below freezing.
What Osprey® does well
Osprey® packs carry better than almost anything else on the market, and the Hydraulics™ reservoir is a genuinely thoughtful design. The magnetic bite valve attachment is the detail people notice most: it holds the valve exactly where you expect it without fumbling for a clip.
Above freezing, there is nothing here that needs fixing. If water stays liquid, an Osprey® setup is hard to beat.
What changes below freezing
The reservoir sits against your back, insulated by your pack and warmed by your body. It holds a lot of water with a lot of thermal mass, so it is the last thing to freeze.
The tube is the opposite: a thin column of water about 7.41 mm across, hanging in open air, often catching the wind. It loses heat fast, and the bite valve, the most exposed point, plugs first. This is true of every unheated tube on the market.
What Ever Sip™ adds
One thing: heat, in the tube and through to the bite valve, so the water inside never reaches freezing. Active Heat™ runs off any common USB power bank down to −1°F (−18.3°C).
The Osprey® version is built on Osprey's own OEM tube and bite valve. We add Active Heat™ to the parts you already use, so the fit, the feel and the magnetic attachment are the ones you know.
It does not heat your water. Your drink stays cold.
Side by side, in the cold
| Standard Osprey® tube | With Ever Sip™ | |
|---|---|---|
| Above freezing | Works excellently | Identical — unplug the battery |
| Below freezing, the tube | Water in the tube reaches ambient and plugs, usually at the bite valve | Heated through to the bite valve, so it cannot solidify |
| What you have to remember | Blow water back after every single sip | Nothing |
| Your reservoir | Keep it | Keep it |
| Your pack | Keep it | Keep it |
| What you replace | — | The tube and bite valve |
| What it is built from | — | Osprey's own OEM tube and bite valve, with Active Heat™ added |
| Power needed | None | Any 5V USB power bank, 1 to 3A |
| Runtime | — | About 12 hours on a 10,000 mAh bank |
| Minimum operating temp | Freezing is the practical limit | −1°F / −18.3°C |
| Your drink | Cold | Cold — only the tube is heated |
Common questions
Do I need to replace my Osprey® reservoir?
No. You keep your reservoir and your pack. We replace the tube and bite valve, and the Osprey® version is built on Osprey's own OEM parts, so it is a direct swap and the magnetic attachment behaves exactly as it does now. Choose the Osprey Hydraulics™ version at checkout. The HydraPak® version fits too, because HydraPak® makes Osprey's tubes and bite valves. The only difference is blue accents instead of red.
What exactly am I getting?
A heated tube and bite valve as one assembly. For the Osprey® version we start from Osprey's own OEM tube and bite valve and add Active Heat™ to them, rather than substituting a generic part. That is why it fits and feels the same as the one you are taking off.
Is Osprey® bad in the cold?
Not at all, and we would not claim that. The tube freezing is not a Osprey® flaw, it is physics that affects every unheated hydration tube regardless of who made it. A thin column of water hanging in open air loses heat far faster than the insulated reservoir against your back, so it is always the first thing to freeze.
Does it make my water hot?
No. Active Heat™ warms the tube and bite valve, not the water. Your drink stays cold and refreshing. The point is only to stop the water in the tube turning solid.
What power bank do I need?
Any standard 5V bank, drawing between 1A and 3A. A 10,000 mAh bank runs it roughly 12 hours, a 5,000 mAh bank about 6 to 7.5. Keep it in an inside pocket, because cold reduces usable battery capacity.
